Frequently Asked Questions

General Product Information

1. What is U-STUCCO™ and how is it different from traditional stucco?

U-STUCCO™ is the world’s first insulated, fireproof, and waterproof stucco system. Unlike traditional cement-based stuccos that provide only a decorative exterior, U-STUCCO™ integrates thermal insulation (R-2.2 per inch), exceptional fire resistance (withstanding over 3,000°F for more than two hours), and waterproofing in one ultra-lightweight formula. It reduces structural loads, increases energy efficiency, and provides unmatched safety against fire, water, and environmental stress.

2. What makes U-STUCCO™ the first true fireproof stucco in the industry?

U-STUCCO™ is engineered with high-performance white Portland cement, mineral-based lightweight aggregates, and proprietary additives, including recycled content. Unlike conventional stucco, which cracks, burns, or disintegrates under extreme heat, U-STUCCO™ has proven to resist direct flame exposure at 3,000°F for over two hours without combusting, emitting toxic gases, or bursting into flames. It is the only stucco product that fully qualifies as fireproof rather than offering limited fire protection.

3. What formulations are available (XPX, HPX, SFX, FRX) and how do they differ?

U-STUCCO™ XPX: The lightest and most cost-efficient formulation, reinforced with polypropylene fibers. It delivers a superior R-value of 2.2 per inch while maintaining full fireproofing. With a density of 35.2 lb (16kg) per bag,

XPX allows up to 1,600 bags per 40’ HC container, making it the most affordable choice for large-scale distribution. XPX is especially suited for ICF (Insulated Concrete Form), ICCF, AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) blocks, CMU blocks, cast-in-place concrete, 3D-printed concrete, and similar masonry wall assemblies, where both insulation and fireproofing are critical.

U-STUCCO™ HPX: A high-performance structural formulation designed for added strength and durability. It provides an R-value of 1.6 per inch, making it slightly less insulating than XPX but mechanically stronger. With a density of 52.8 lb (24kg) per bag, HPX is limited to 1,080 bags per 40’ HC container.

HPX is ideal for high-traffic areas where impact resistance is required, as well as retrofit projects where it can be applied as a fireproof coating over existing stucco on wood-framed structures. HPX is also well-suited for use with EPS, XPS, polyiso, DensGlass, Zip System, and Rockwool substrates, where both fire protection and structural durability are essential.

U-STUCCO™ SFX: A finishing-grade formulation engineered to provide smooth, architectural surfaces without compromising protection. SFX is designed as the final exterior layer, combining aesthetics, weatherproofing, and fireproof performance.

U-STUCCO™ FRX: The most robust fireproofing formulation, developed for extreme fire exposure in commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects. FRX maximizes flame endurance, ensuring compliance in the most demanding safety environments.

All U-STUCCO™ formulations are VOC-free, making them safe and universal for both exterior and interior applications without compromising indoor air quality.

U-STUCCO™ provides:

  • Fireproofing beyond 3,000°F for more than 2 hours with no toxic emissions.

  • Thermal insulation up to (R-2.2 per inch) that improves wall assembly performance.

  • High water resistance and hydrophobic properties.

  • Proven performance against cracks and environmental stress

  • Easy, one-pass application up to 1 inch thick.

  • Compatibility with multiple substrates (EPS, XPS, ICF, MgO, AAC, Rockwool, wood, steel, etc.).

  • Green compliance, with recycled content and VOC-free formulation.

5. Is U-STUCCO™ considered a green building material?

Yes. U-STUCCO™ is a next-generation sustainable building solution. It is produced with mineral-based lightweight aggregates and post-consumer recycled content, reducing reliance on virgin raw materials. Unlike conventional stucco, U-STUCCO™ is the first stucco product with measurable thermal insulation values (R-2.2 per inch), which significantly reduces thermal bridging in wall assemblies. This lowers heating and cooling demand, making U-STUCCO™ a LEED-friendly, Title 24–compliant solution that directly supports energy-efficient construction.

Equally important, U-STUCCO™ is 100% silica-free. Traditional stuccos often contain crystalline silica, exposure to which can cause silicosis and long-term respiratory illnesses in construction workers. By eliminating silica from our formulations, U-STUCCO™ not only improves sustainability but also protects the health and safety of applicators and building occupants.

U-STUCCO™ is also naturally mold- and mildew-proof. Its inorganic mineral composition provides no organic “food source” for fungal cultures, preventing biological growth on surfaces even in humid or coastal environments. This extends building life, reduces maintenance costs, and contributes to healthier indoor and outdoor air quality.

In addition, U-STUCCO™’s ultra-lightweight formula enables up to five times more material to be shipped per truckload or container compared to traditional stucco. This efficiency cuts fuel use, lowers transportation emissions, and reduces the embodied carbon footprint of every project.

The product is VOC-free, fully compliant with EPA and OSHA standards, and universally safe for both interior and exterior use. Together, these attributes make U-STUCCO™ the most efficient, health-conscious, and environmentally responsible stucco solution in the world.

Wildfire Test: Real-world wildfire simulation conducted with SoCal Edison. U-STUCCO™ protected a test structure that remained intact, while an identical unprotected structure burned down in under 60 minutes.

AS 1530 (Australia – Fire Safety of Building Components): A suite of small-scale tests assessing combustibility, flammability, heat release, and smoke. Confirms U-STUCCO™ components meet Australian fire safety requirements.

AS 5113 (Australia – Large-Scale Façade Fire Propagation): A full-scale test for external wall systems. It evaluates flame spread, falling debris, and system integrity under fire exposure. Passing demonstrates U-STUCCO™ façades resist large-scale fire propagation.

Globally, U-STUCCO™ has also been tested and approved in Brazil, India, China, Chile, Japan, the UK, and South Africa, demonstrating consistent performance across diverse regulatory environments.

Fireproofing & Safety

8. How fireproof is U-STUCCO™?

U-STUCCO™ is the first true fireproof stucco system in the industry. It has been independently proven to withstand direct flame exposure at over 3,000°F (1,650°C) for two hours under the Jet Fire Test — one of the most extreme fire scenarios in the world. Unlike standard hydrocarbon pool fires, the Jet Fire Test combines intense heat with high-velocity flame impact, replicating ruptured fuel or gas line explosions. Very few construction materials can survive this test — U-STUCCO™ passed successfully.

In our internal trials, U-STUCCO™ has endured up to four continuous hours of fire exposure without loss of integrity. It has also passed additional world-class standards, including ASTM E136 (non-combustibility), NFPA 285 (full wall assembly fire propagation), and AS 5113 (large-scale façade fire test in Australia). In real-world wildfire testing with SoCal Edison, a U-STUCCO™-coated structure remained intact, while an identical uncoated structure collapsed in under an hour.

Simply put, U-STUCCO™ delivers unmatched fireproofing performance, far exceeding traditional stucco and positioning itself as the go-to solution for wildfire-prone, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects worldwide.

9. What makes U-STUCCO™ a strategic partner for the insulated concrete form (ICF) industry?

U-STUCCO™ enables combustible wall assemblies (such as EPS, XPS, and polyiso systems) to pass stringent NFPA 285 and NFPA 286 fire tests — something not possible with conventional stucco products. This capability makes U-STUCCO™ an essential partner product for EPS and ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) block and panel manufacturers, allowing their systems to achieve code compliance and expand into markets previously restricted due to fire safety limitations.

By providing the missing fireproofing link, U-STUCCO™ has become a strategic solution partner for the EPS and ICF industry, helping manufacturers not only meet the most demanding fire standards but also increase market acceptance and adoption of their wall systems worldwide.

10. What is the difference between UL 1709 and Jet Fire tests, and how does U-STUCCO™ compare?

Both UL 1709 and the Jet Fire Test simulate hydrocarbon fire conditions, but they differ in severity:

UL 1709 (Hydrocarbon Pool Fire): Exposes materials to ~2,000°F (1,093°C) within minutes, simulating large-scale petroleum pool fires. It primarily measures how quickly a material can insulate and protect steel or assemblies from extreme radiant heat.

Jet Fire Test: Considered even harsher, it subjects materials to high-velocity, directional hydrocarbon flames exceeding 3,000°F (1,650°C). This not only delivers extreme thermal radiation but also mechanical flame impingement, simulating ruptured gas or fuel line explosions.

By surviving Jet Fire, U-STUCCO™ demonstrates fire protection performance that outclasses conventional stucco and most industrial-grade coatings.

11. Does U-STUCCO™ release toxic gases or smoke during a fire?

No. U-STUCCO™ is inorganic and VOC-free. During fire exposure it does not emit toxic gases, carcinogens, or black smoke — a major safety improvement over many conventional coatings or synthetic claddings.

12. How does U-STUCCO™ help homeowners reduce insurance costs?

U-STUCCO™ provides a level of fire protection far beyond traditional stucco or any other exterior cladding. By withstanding direct flame exposure at over 3,000°F for multiple hours and preventing flames from spreading through exterior walls, it dramatically lowers the risk of a home being destroyed during a wildfire.

This proven performance makes homes safer, more resilient, and less likely to generate costly claims for insurers. Fire marshals with more than 30 years of field experience made these comments after witnessing U-STUCCO™’s outstanding performance during SoCal Edison’s wildfire testing, further validating its role as a true fire-mitigation solution.

In wildfire-prone states such as California, Texas, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, and Hawaii, insurance carriers are tightening coverage and raising premiums due to frequent catastrophic losses. Because U-STUCCO™ reduces the probability of fire damage so significantly, it is increasingly recognized as a fire-mitigation solution, meaning homes built or retrofitted with it may qualify for:

  • Lower insurance premiums through wildfire risk reduction programs.

  • Improved insurability in areas where carriers have withdrawn coverage for high-risk properties.

  • Compliance advantages, as some state and municipal fire marshals encourage or mandate higher levels of fireproofing for new construction and retrofits.

By reducing both the likelihood and severity of fire damage, U-STUCCO™ helps homeowners secure affordable insurance options and provides peace of mind in regions where traditional construction methods struggle to meet wildfire challenges.

Thermal & Energy Efficiency

13. What is the R-value of U-STUCCO™?

U-STUCCO™ delivers an R-value of 2.2 per inch, which is unprecedented in the stucco industry. Traditional stucco provides virtually no insulation (R-0.20–0.25 per inch), meaning U-STUCCO™ improves wall performance by nearly 10x while maintaining all the structural and protective qualities of Portland cement plaster.

14. How does U-STUCCO™ help with California Title 24 compliance?

California Title 24 requires strict energy efficiency standards for wall assemblies. By applying U-STUCCO™, builders significantly increase exterior wall R-values without adding extra insulation layers. Its continuous, crack-resistant blanket eliminates thermal bridging around wood and steel studs, helping projects meet or exceed Title 24 requirements with minimal to no design changes.

15. How does it reduce thermal bridging in walls and assemblies?

Unlike batt insulation or rigid foam, which leave gaps at studs and fasteners, U-STUCCO™ is applied as a continuous exterior coating. This blanket-like application seals over structural breaks, preventing thermal leaks and creating a more energy-efficient wall assembly.

Water & Moisture Resistance

16. Is U-STUCCO™ water-resistant?

Yes. U-STUCCO™ is inherently hydrophobic, creating a water-resistant barrier that prevents liquid water intrusion while still allowing vapor permeability. This ensures wall systems remain dry, breathable, and free from trapped moisture.

17. Is U-STUCCO™ vapor-permeable, and why is that important?

Yes. At ½” thickness, U-STUCCO™ achieves a perm rating of about 25, which means it is highly vapor-permeable. This unique balance allows the system to block liquid water from entering while still letting water vapor escape. That “water-resistant yet breathable” quality is essential to prevent trapped moisture, which can otherwise lead to mold, mildew, rot, and long-term structural damage. By keeping wall assemblies dry and healthy, U-STUCCO™ ensures greater durability and indoor air quality.

18. How does U-STUCCO™ perform in humid, coastal, or rainy environments?

U-STUCCO™ is specifically engineered to withstand high-moisture and coastal conditions. Independent testing to ASTM B117 (Salt Spray/Fog Exposure) subjected U-STUCCO™ samples to a 5% salt solution for 300 continuous hours. At the end of the test, there were no signs of cracking, softening, erosion, or discoloration, proving the material’s resistance to salt spray and marine exposure .

Combined with its water-resistant yet vapor-permeable nature, U-STUCCO™ is ideal for coastal and tropical climates where salt, humidity, and heavy rainfall quickly degrade traditional stuccos. It also resists efflorescence, surface cracking, and mold/mildew growth, ensuring long-term durability and clean performance in the most demanding environments.

19. Is U-STUCCO™ mold and mildew-resistant?

Yes. U-STUCCO™ has been proven to be completely resistant to mold and mildew growth. In laboratory testing to ASTM G21 (Resistance of Materials to Fungal Growth), samples were exposed for 28 days in a chamber with 85% humidity and 82–86°F (28–30°C) temperatures, then inoculated with five of the most aggressive fungal species, including Aspergillus brasiliensis, Penicillium pinophilum, and Chaetomium globosum.

At the end of the test, all U-STUCCO™ specimens received a rating of 0 — no fungal growth observed. By comparison, the control samples showed heavy contamination (ratings 3–4), confirming that the test conditions were valid. This is the best possible outcome under ASTM G21, and far superior to typical building materials, many of which show moderate to heavy fungal growth under the same conditions.

The reason for this performance is U-STUCCO™’s hydrophobic surface and inorganic mineral composition, which provide no food source for fungal cultures. Unlike organic-based claddings that can trap moisture and sustain microbial growth, U-STUCCO™ maintains clean, durable, and healthier walls even in humid, coastal, or tropical climates.

In short: U-STUCCO™ achieved outstanding results — a perfect “no growth” rating — proving itself as one of the most mold- and mildew-resistant stucco systems available worldwide.

Application & Installation

20. How is U-STUCCO™ applied—trowel, spray, or both?

U-STUCCO™ can be applied using either trowel or spray methods, giving contractors flexibility depending on project size and complexity. Spray application is ideal for covering large wall areas quickly and efficiently, reducing labor time on commercial or multifamily projects. Trowel application offers greater control and precision, making it suitable for detailed work, edges, and architectural features.

Because U-STUCCO™ is supplied as a ready-to-mix powder, it requires no special tools or advanced training — standard plastering and stucco equipment are sufficient. This ease of use ensures smooth adoption for crews already familiar with stucco application, while providing the option to scale up with spray rigs for high-volume jobs.

21. What substrates is U-STUCCO™ compatible with?

U-STUCCO™ is engineered as a universal stucco system, designed to bond securely across nearly all modern and traditional building substrates. It can be applied directly over:

  • ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) and ICCF blocks and panels

  • AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) and CMU blocks

  • Mineral Wool Insulation (such as RockWool)

  • MgO (Magnesium Oxide) panels

  • 3D-printed concrete walls

  • Concrete, precast concrete, tilt-up panels, and cinder block

  • Masonry veneers or stone backings as a fireproofing or leveling base coat

  • Fiber cement boards (such as Hardie Board)

  • Exterior gypsum sheathing (Such as DensGlass)

  • Combustible insulation systems such as EPS, XPS, and Polyiso

  • Exposed steel structures

  • Wood-framed assemblies — when applied as a top coat over existing brown coat, providing additional fireproofing and durability

This broad compatibility makes U-STUCCO™ a single, code-ready solution across residential, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects.

22. What is the recommended application thickness?

½ inch → Meets NFPA 285 fire code requirements.

¾ inch → Enhanced fire endurance and improved insulating value.

1 inch → Maximum performance with multi-hour fireproofing and the best thermal efficiency.

U-STUCCO™ can be applied in a single pass up to 1 inch thick without cracking or delamination, thanks to its advanced high-performance polymers and ultra-lightweight mineral formula. Conventional stucco, by contrast, requires multiple coats/ days and extended curing times to achieve the same thickness.

23. How many square feet does one bag of U-STUCCO™ XPX and HPX cover?

Both U-STUCCO™ XPX and HPX formulations provide the same surface coverage:

At ½ inch thickness: ~34 sq. ft. per bag

At ¾ inch thickness: ~23 sq. ft. per bag

At 1 inch thickness: ~17 sq. ft. per bag

Coverage may vary slightly depending on substrate texture, surface preparation, and installation method (trowel vs. spray).

24. Does U-STUCCO™ require multiple coats, or can it be applied in one pass?

U-STUCCO™ is engineered as a true one-coat system, capable of being applied up to 1 inch thick in a single pass without sagging, cracking, or delamination. However, it can also be applied in multiple thinner coats if desired, giving contractors flexibility based on project requirements, site conditions, or personal preference.

By reducing the need for mandatory three-coat applications, U-STUCCO™ dramatically lowers labor time, labor cost, and scaffolding expenses, while accelerating schedules and ensuring long-term performance.

25. Is special training or equipment required to apply U-STUCCO™?

U-STUCCO™ follows the same application methods as traditional stucco, so no special tools or training are required. Any skilled stucco or plaster installer can use standard tools and equipment to apply it. Preparation is simple — just add water and mix before application.

Unlike conventional stucco, which requires to be mixed with sand on the jobsite, U-STUCCO™ comes as a ready-to-use dry mix. With its ultra-lightweight, sand-free formula (up to 80% lighter than regular stucco), it is easier to transport, handle, and install — reducing labor effort, mixing errors, and installation time.

26. Can U-STUCCO™ replace scratch and brown coats as well as finish coats?

Yes. U-STUCCO™ was designed to replace traditional scratch and brown coats, eliminating the need for multi-layer stucco applications. Unlike conventional grey stucco, U-STUCCO™ is naturally white in color, which allows it to function as a finish coat when sealed with a water-based sealant or water-based paint, reducing steps and simplifying installation.

Since it is a Portland cement–based product, U-STUCCO™ is also fully compatible with third-party finish coats, giving contractors and designers the flexibility to apply decorative or specialty finishes over it if desired. It can be used as a durable base for any compatible stucco, plaster, or paint system excluding WRB and lath over wood sheathing.

Contractor Tip: U-STUCCO™ can either be left as a clean white finish (sealed with a water-based sealant or paint) or serve as a universal base for other systems, while still maintaining its vapor permeability and high-performance durability.

27. Can U-STUCCO™ be used indoors as plaster?

Yes. U-STUCCO™ can be applied to interior walls and ceilings as a high-performance plaster alternative. Once installed, it can be sanded and finished to a smooth surface, ready for paint or sealant. Its fireproof, VOC-free, and mold-resistant properties make it an ideal choice for healthier indoor environments, while offering durability far beyond traditional gypsum-based plasters.

Because U-STUCCO™ is naturally white in color, it can also serve as a finished surface indoors when sealed with a clear water-based sealant, eliminating the need for additional coatings. In addition, U-STUCCO™ contributes to better thermal comfort and acoustic performance, making it especially valuable in luxury residences, commercial interiors, and high-performance buildings where both aesthetics and performance matter.

Durability & Longevity

28. How crack- and impact-resistant is U-STUCCO™?

U-STUCCO™ is engineered for exceptional crack and impact resistance. Its reinforcement with polypropylene (PP) fibers provides tensile strength to control micro-cracking, while the ultra-lightweight mineral composition reduces shrinkage stresses that commonly cause cracking in traditional stucco.

Unlike conventional multi-coat systems that build internal stresses at each layer, U-STUCCO™ can be applied in a single pass up to 1 inch thick without sagging or delamination, creating a more dimensionally stable surface. Its super low thermal conductivity (up to R-2.2 per inch) also minimizes thermal stress cracking, making it highly reliable in desert climates and regions with extreme temperature swings.

When subjected to high impact, U-STUCCO™ behaves differently than regular stucco: instead of cracking and crumbling, it typically forms a clean dent — like a scar — without even a visible hairline crack. By contrast, traditional stucco would shatter under the same conditions, creating multiple cracks and loose fragments. These small dents in U-STUCCO™ can be easily repaired by reapplying the same material, restoring a seamless surface without costly or labor-intensive patchwork.

29. Does it resist UV degradation?

Yes. U-STUCCO™ is inherently UV-stable because its matrix is inorganic (Portland-cement and mineral aggregates)rather than polymer-based. UV light does not break down the cementitious binder, so the material won’t embrittle, soften, or yellow the way many organic coatings can.

Why it performs well under sun exposure

High reflectance (white finish): The naturally white surface reflects a larger share of solar radiation, which lowers peak surface temperatures. Cooler surfaces undergo less thermal expansion/contraction, helping limit fatigue and hairline cracking in hot, high-sun climates.

Encapsulated reinforcement: The polypropylene (PP) fibers that add toughness are fully embedded in the cement matrix, shielding them from direct UV exposure.

Hydrophobic surface: Reduced water uptake means less UV-accelerated weathering from wet/dry cycling and fewer issues like staining that can accompany long sun exposure.

Appearance & maintenance guidance

For projects that want to lock in color or sheen, finish U-STUCCO™ with a water-based, breathable sealant or paint that uses UV-stable pigments; this preserves vapor permeability while enhancing color durability.

Darker colors can increase heat absorption; if selected, consider thickness at the upper end (¾–1”) to further buffer thermal cycling.

In short, U-STUCCO™ resists UV degradation and maintains integrity after prolonged sun exposure, while its reflective, breathable surface helps keep exterior assemblies cooler and more dimensionally stable in hot climates.

30. What is U-STUCCO’s density compared to traditional stucco?

U-STUCCO™ is up to 80% lighter than conventional stucco, dramatically reducing dead load while making mixing, handling, and installation faster, easier, and less labor-intensive

Traditional Stucco

Density: ~3,742 lb/yd³ (2,220 kg/m³)

Weight at 1” thickness: ~11.5 lb/ft² (5.2 kg/m²)

U-STUCCO™ XPX

Density: ~758 lb/yd³ (450 kg/m³)

Weight at 1” thickness: ~2.3 lb/ft² (1.1 kg/m²)

~80% lighter than traditional stucco

U-STUCCO™ HPX

Density: ~1,096 lb/yd³ (650 kg/m³)

Weight at 1” thickness: ~3.4 lb/ft² (1.5 kg/m²)

~70% lighter than traditional stucco

31. How does it perform in freeze-thaw cycles?

U-STUCCO™ demonstrates outstanding freeze–thaw durability due to its low water absorption rating (W1) — the strictest performance category under EN 998-1 for external renders. This classification confirms that U-STUCCO™ absorbs minimal water, preventing the internal expansion stresses that typically lead to cracking, spalling, and surface delamination in conventional stuccos.

Combined with its hydrophobic mineral composition and fiber-reinforced lightweight design, U-STUCCO™ maintains dimensional stability even under repeated freeze–thaw cycling. As a result, it is particularly well-suited for cold, wet, and coastal regions, where conventional stucco often fails.
